How to understand your audience better

The other day, I was searching for a gift for my son’s little friend, who's turning 4, and it got me thinking …

Buying a gift for someone is a lot like writing for your target audience.

You wouldn't buy a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle for a 4-year-old, or Batman Lego for your 80-year-old gran … right?!

Just like when you're buying the perfect gift for someone, writing copy for your target audience requires careful thought.

Think about age, interests, needs, likes and dislikes. Put yourself in their shoes and consider how you'd like to be communicated with.

By tailoring your writing to your audience, you can create content that resonates and draws attention, building meaningful connections and creating a lasting impact.

Of course, the better you understand your audience, the more effectively you can craft your writing to meet their needs. And research and analysis are key to understanding demographics, preferences and behaviours.

So, the next time you've got your fingers hovering over your keyboard, imagine you're browsing the shelves in a shop, searching for the perfect gift for your target audience … a gift that will keep them coming back for more.

Happy writing all!
